Big data could create compliance issues

For companies, there is no other time when data has been so prevalent as it is right now. Between email and electronic files and more, there is a lot to keep track of, and Ericka Chickowski, a contributing editor for Dark Reading, said this could create compliance issues for businesses. Companies should always keep up with PCI compliance and make sure they are following all necessary rules.

"Sea changes in the speed at which data was flowing mainly due to electronic commerce, along with the increasing breadth of data sources, structures and formats due to the post Y2K-ERP application boom were as or more challenging to data management teams than was the increasing quantity of data," according to Garnter's Doug Laney.

Chickowski writes on the website that what will happen with big data is still up in the air, as there are still new technologies emerging and new areas where it could be stored. She said the question for security professionals is how to manage all of this information and data.

For eCommerce businesses that take credit and debit cards, PCI DSS guidelines should be followed no matter how much information comes in, as this helps protect businesses and its customers.
