Customers shopping in different ways changes the retail IT game

The lines between eCommerce and retail shops are starting to blur, according to Graham Benson, the CIO of M&M District. Benson writes on ComputerWeekly that customers are now using a multi-channel approach to shopping, so companies should make sure they have good security with things such as code signing digital certificates and PCI DSS certification.

"If we as IT departments are to be successful in this brave new world, in some areas we will need to change beyond current recognition," Benson said. "We will need to unlearn many of the habits we have spent a whole career perfecting."

As an example, there will be no more standardization of hardware or software, as people will use whatever they want to get the job done. This could cause anarchy, or for a prepared business it could mean a good opportunity to gain customer loyalty by having great security. Benson said businesses that change with the times will be more successful than those that do not.

WebHostingGeeks said SSL certificates can be extremely important for eCommerce businesses, especially those that collect names and information such as addresses and credit card numbers, as the certificates can help protect this information.
