DigiNotar breach may affect ecommerce businesses

SSL certificate provider DigiNotar recently revealed that a hack of its system earlier this summer has resulted in the theft of an unknown amount of SSL certificates. The Dutch company reported that it has acted in accordance with various regulations in alerting the domain owners to the possibility of intrustions.

DigiNotar has suspended its awarding of SSL certificates while a third-party organization investigates the breach. According to a release from the company, it expects to have the issue sorted out by the end of the week, but it would not place a concrete timetable on the end of the investigation.

SSL certificates are used by countless websites to secure login information. Email vendors, ecommerce companies and others rely on SSL to ensure that their customers' information is protected from potential hacking attacks.

Google recently reported that one of the certificates stolen by the cyber criminal was used to spy on a substantial amount of Gmail users in Iran. The location of those targeted has led some to speculate the Iranian government was behind the attack.
