Ecommerce companies should be careful when building website

Although the costs to small businesses for building eCommerce websites have gone down significantly over the past few years, companies need to be careful when choosing how to build their website. Charles Costa, owner of a web development firm, wrote on Smallbiztechnology.com that using a cookie cutter solution may not be the way to go, as every company has a unique need.

One area where companies need to be especially careful is data security, which he said is never 100 percent positive or negative any way you go. He said for small businesses, larger security umbrellas are usually better since they can patch and make fixes quicker than a smaller security solution would be able to. A base solution for a company could be PCI compliance, which would help guide companies in protecting customers' credit and debit card information.

Bob Russo, general manager of the PCI Security Council, spoke with Practical eCommerce about what can be done to help secure websites past PCI DSS guidelines.

"You really need to bake security into whatever you do," Russo said, adding that not planning for data security usually leads to failure. "So, I would weigh very, very carefully what they tell you. As a merchant, you know that if you go to somebody PCI-compliant, you're at least starting on a solid foundation.
