Hyped technologies to have significant effect on ecommerce, business IT

Mobile connectivity, private cloud solutions and a host of other technologies were highlighted by Gartner Research's most recent Hype Cycle Special Report as being among the hottest trends in the tech world.

"Mobile technologies continue to be part of most of our clients' short- and long-range plans and are present on this Hype Cycle in the form of media tablets, NFC payments, quick response (QR)/color codes, mobile application stores and location-aware applications," said Gartner fellow and company vice president Jackie Fenn.

Gartner placed near-field communication payment technology - which includes using smartphones as virtual wallets, allowing users to make electronic purchases - at the top of the "peak of inflated expectations." This could mean that the perceived value of the technology is higher than its actual utility to businesses.

In the case of NFC payments, data security could easily be a serious issue, according to experts. Sending and receiving financial information over any wireless connection, however secure, is likely to be viewed as an opportunity by would-be cyber criminals.
