IT experts say cloud, security, mobile devices have greatest growth potential

As more businesses implement cloud computing and employees store important information on mobile devices, data security has become an even more vital operation for IT departments.

According to PCWorld, a recent study by technology staffing firm Modis revealed that IT professionals expect cloud computing, mobile tools and data security to have the greatest growth potential during the next few years.

Based on the report, 29 percent of the 502 respondents believed cloud computing had the brightest future, while security and mobile devices gained 21 and 18 percent of votes, respectively. With companies beginning to transfer services to mobile platforms, data security will become a more important issue as cybercriminals target smartphones and tablets, the report concluded.

"Security has got to be one of the first things you think about even before talking about mobile applications or strategy," Modis president Jack Cullen said, according to the news source. "Firms first need to ask how they plan on securing their information in a cloud computing environment. There's such a fear of what hackers can do around mobile devices that security is paramount."

According to recent survey conducted by a global IT security company, 64 percent of IT professionals said they weren't positive their company's data would be secure if an employee's mobile device was lost or stolen.
