Management can help to reduce error rates

For companies trying to increase IT security on their eCommerce website and reduce error rates, industry analyst Bob Tarzey said to try using better management and automation techniques in system administration.

"Our new research shows the average sys-admin’s error rate is about seven percent," Tarzey said on Channel Web. "One way to reduce error rates is better management of privilege. To achieve this, it is necessary to deploy tools to manage the scope of privilege access, limiting the range of data and devices to which a sys-admin has access and the time during which they have the access."

Tarzey said privileged use should be restricted and controlled, and PCI DSS said all privileged user activity needs to be audited. He said many businesses don't have the controls in place to make this happen and instead have "appalling practices" of placing uncontrolled changes to the system prior to audits.

The PCI Security Standards Council said managing a system and making sure all data is encrypted is an integral part of card security for a business.
