Online shopping up big time, data security becomes more important

The surge in online sales this past holiday season made it clear that eCommerce is here to stay.

Chase Paymentech's Cyber Holiday Pulse Index shows that transactions were up 37 percent from November 1 to December 31 from the previous year. With this in mind, businesses should make sure their data security is up to par so customers can feel safe shopping online.

"Online shoppers made the most of the final days, driving transactions and sales higher right up to the last minute," the Holiday Index said. "With December 25th falling on a Sunday this year, merchants were able to offer guaranteed shipping later into the week, giving consumers extra time to make online purchases. Shopping resumed on Monday, December 26th as consumers took advantage of post-holiday deals, redeemed gift cards, and filled their new digital devices with media."

With more consumers turning to ecommerce companies to make purchases,  meeting PCI compliance is essential for businesses that want to maintain and expand their operations. The influx of credit card information and other valuable payment details has made security and data protection a high-level priority.

In turn, making sure PCI DSS guidelines are followed will lead to more customer loyalty, as people will continue to shop on eCommerce websites they trust.
