PCI compliance is a day-to-day necessity

For companies who accept credit and debit cards online, PCI compliance is a day-to-day necessity, according to Cliff Duffey on Retail Technology. He said companies that are heavily connected to the internet are the ones most in need of the PCI DSS guidelines.

"Not a day goes by when you don't hear another example of customer credit card data being stolen," he writes. "As security breaches and identity theft cases have grown more widespread, protecting sensitive data has become more important than ever for convenience store operators."

Duffey said there are some costs associated with keeping up PCI compliance, but companies can make a move into cloud computing to reduce the costs of IT security in their eCommerce business. Using the cloud, companies have the ability to quell the amount of money they would have to spend on new pieces of security technology.

SecureCloudReview said new PCI DSS 2.0 standards are a "welcome development" for the cloud community, as they allow merchants to stay PCI complaint and take advantage of cloud solutions.
