Top 10 riskiest online cities released

While security usually comes down to whether a company practices PCI compliance or uses SSL certificates, a new report from Norton and Sperling's BestPlaces uncovers the 10 riskiest online cities.

The list has Washington, D.C., at No. 1, Seattle in second place, San Francisco third, Atlanta at fourth and Boston rounding out the top five. The rest of the cities on the list include Denver; Minneapolis; Sacramento; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Austin, Texas. Norton said the cities with the highest risks do not necessarily correlate with the highest infection rates.

"In our examination of the riskiest online cities, we've considered a number of factors that can potentially affect online safety," said Bert Sperling, founder of Sperling's BestPlaces and lead researcher for the analysis. "By looking at data from consumer lifestyle habits as well as cybercrime data provided by Symantec, maker of Norton products, we're able to provide a holistic view of the various factors that put a person at potential risk."

PCI Compliance Guide said there are states that require different data security laws. This may have an effect on these rankings. As an example, the website said California and about 38 other states have breach notification laws in place now.
