What executives should understand about mobile commerce

More eCommerce websites are starting to look into mobile payment options and Eric Koester - founder and chief marketing officer of Zaarly, a real-time mobile marketplace - said there are certain things executives should know before getting into this themselves. PCI compliance should also definitely be invested in to protect the customers in a mobile transaction.

Koester said people should first and foremost understand that mobile commerce is already here and likely to grow. Ecommerce-Guide chimes in on this, saying that by 2015, more than 8 percent of the overall eCommerce spending will be on mobile devices, which means the eCommerce industry should learn to embrace mobile devices for payments.

"While those are staggering figures for such a ‘youthful’ market, let’s also step back to remember that mobile commerce would still only be half a percent of total retail sales if the experts are right," Koester said. "Mobile commerce and innovation are still in their infancy. Remember that the concept of the 'app' is less than five years old. While the technology and the market are going gangbusters, it’s still an early market with much left to be sorted out."

Koester said there is still no mobile payment winner on the market yet, privacy needs to be paid attention to and mobile is not an extension of the web so it shouldn't be thought about it as the same. PCI compliance, SSL certificates and other security methods should be looked into by companies.
